How to Book a Gondola Ride in Venice

You can hire a gondola at a station when you arrive or book a shared or private ride online in advance. Choose a station ride if you can be flexible about when you board. Book ahead when a particular departure, private option or included activity matters to your day.

Book ahead or hire a gondola on the day?

ChoiceWhen it suits youBefore you commit
Hire at a gondola stationYou want to choose the area and arrange the ride in personConfirm the fare, route, duration and payment method before boarding
Book a shared ride onlineYou want individual places at a selected departureCheck the per-person total and whether your group may be split between boats
Book a private ride onlineYou want the gondola reserved for your partyConfirm the total for everyone, capacity, meeting point and included extras

Booking ahead gives you a selected departure and written meeting instructions. Hiring at a station leaves the timing to the day and may involve a wait. Neither choice guarantees a particular canal or landmark unless the route is agreed or included in the tour.

02

1. Compare the total for your group

The municipal station fare is €90 for a 30-minute daytime ride or €110 for a 35-minute night ride, for up to five passengers. Shared tickets usually charge per person; private online bookings can use a different price and duration. Compare the amount for your whole party using the gondola price guide.

If you are hiring at a station, use the stations and routes guide to choose an area and agree the ride before boarding. For an online reservation, follow the remaining steps below.

03

2. Select your date, departure and ticket

Enter every passenger, including children and babies. Choose shared or private, then check the language, time aboard and any extras. A longer experience can include an introduction, a gallery or another attraction rather than more time in the gondola.

The ride comparison helps you choose between a straightforward ride, commentary, a serenade and a combination tour. For shared seating, check whether everyone in your booking will travel in the same boat.

3. Read the payment and cancellation terms

For the featured Grand Canal ride, free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before the activity for a full refund. A reserve-now-and-pay-later choice can let you secure a place before payment is due. Check the terms attached to your date and option before confirming.

Other tours can have different terms. Keep the customer cancellation deadline separate from an operator cancellation for unsafe weather; the rain and refunds guide explains the difference.

05

4. Save your mobile ticket

For the featured ride booked through GetYourGuide, you can use a mobile ticket without printing it. Save the confirmation and meeting instructions where you can reach them on your phone before leaving for the ride.

06

5. Go to the meeting point on your confirmation

A booked ticket has its own check-in location. It does not let you board at any gondola station. For the featured Grand Canal experience, the meeting point can be Venice Tours Srl near St. Mark’s Square or Campo San Moisè, according to the ticket option.

Follow the address and arrival instructions on your confirmation. The meeting-point guide explains those locations.
