01

The five-passenger limit

The City of Venice sets the maximum at five passengers for the gondola service. The promoted Grand Canal experience uses the same maximum.

The gondolier remains responsible for safe balance and assigns seats according to weight distribution. A group of five can travel in one gondola, but you may not be able to choose exactly where everyone sits.

02

Group sizes at a glance

  • One or two people: choose shared for value or private when you want the gondola to yourselves.
  • Three to five people: one private gondola can keep the group together, subject to the selected ticket and availability.
  • Six to ten people: reserve at least two gondolas.
  • Larger groups: arrange enough boats and allow time for boarding; simultaneous departures should be confirmed, not assumed.

03

Do children count as passengers?

Include every adult and child when you check availability. Do not assume that a baby or a child can be added beyond the five-person maximum.

The correct ticket category and group arrangement depend on the option you choose. Enter the full party during booking so the operator can confirm the right number of places.

04

Shared rides and keeping together

A shared gondola can place your party with other travellers. Random Seating does not guarantee that everyone in a larger booking will be placed in the same gondola.

If staying together matters, compare the private option and confirm the group size before payment. Private means the selected gondola is for your group; it does not change the five-passenger limit.

05

What happens with a group of six?

Book two gondolas or choose another boat service that can carry the whole party. Do not arrive expecting the gondolier to make an exception.

For a special occasion, ask whether the boats can depart close together. Venice's narrow canals and traffic mean two gondolas may not remain side by side throughout the ride.
