Ten tips that prevent most mistakes

  1. Choose the experience first. Decide whether you want a sightseeing gondola, a €2 traghetto crossing, public transport or a longer boat tour.
  2. Compare the full group price. Some rides are priced per person and others per gondola.
  3. Pick the time for a reason. Morning is practical, late afternoon gives the best balance and evening prioritises atmosphere.
  4. Ask about the route. A nearby landmark is not a guarantee that the gondola passes it.
  5. Know whether the ride is shared. Two tickets do not automatically reserve the boat for two people.
  6. Check actual time on the water. A longer activity can include an introduction, walking tour or attraction visit.
  7. Do not assume singing or prosecco. Select an option that explicitly includes the extra you want.
  8. Prepare for the weather. The boat is open, routes can change and unsafe conditions can cancel the ride.
  9. Bring little luggage. Large bags are not allowed on the promoted experience and make boarding harder elsewhere.
  10. Keep the confirmation ready. A pre-booked ticket has a specific meeting point and start time.

02

Choose the best time

Late afternoon is the best all-round choice for most first-time visitors. Morning suits a cooler start, sunset suits changing light and evening suits atmosphere.

Read the full best-time guide before choosing the departure closest to sunset.

03

Choose where to board

Use St Mark’s or Rialto when famous surroundings and convenience matter. Consider another official station when smaller canals or fitting the ride into a different neighbourhood matters more.

Ask where the gondola will go before boarding. No station name guarantees a fixed route, the Bridge of Sighs or an uncrowded canal. See the station and route guide for the practical choices.

04

Understand the price

The promoted ticket costs €37 per person. Municipal gondola fares are per boat, while a €2 traghetto is only a public crossing. Compare totals for the complete group instead of assuming one format is always cheaper.

Use the price guide for group totals, private pricing and the cheapest choices.

05

Shared or private

Choose shared when price matters and you accept other passengers and assigned seating. Choose private when keeping the group together, privacy or a proposal matters.

A gondola carries no more than five passengers. Six people need at least two boats. Read the shared and private guide before booking.

06

What to confirm before paying

  • Total price for the whole group
  • Duration on the water
  • Shared or private format
  • Route or main waterways
  • Meeting point or gondola station
  • Commentary language and delivery method
  • Cancellation terms
  • Payment method
  • Passenger and luggage limits
  • Any promised music, drink or attraction entry

If a detail matters to the experience, do not assume it is included.

07

What to bring

Wear comfortable shoes for the walk to the meeting point and boarding steps. Keep the mobile ticket accessible and leave large bags behind.

Bring weather protection suited to the forecast without carrying more than you can manage safely while boarding. Remain seated and follow the gondolier’s instructions once in the boat.

08

If rain is forecast

Light rain does not automatically cancel every ride. Unsafe conditions, high water or heavy rain can change the route or stop the service.

Separate the operator’s weather decision from your own cancellation deadline. Read the rain and cancellation guide before cancelling a ticket yourself.
