The safest payment plan
Payment is straightforward when you decide how you want to book before you reach the canal.
- Booking online: pay through the secure checkout and keep the mobile confirmation on your phone.
- Walking up to a gondola station: confirm the fare, duration, route and payment method before you step aboard.
- Want to use a card: ask first; card acceptance can differ between stations and operators.
- Want no surprises: carry euros as a backup, even if you plan to pay by card.
02
Paying for a pre-booked gondola ride
An online ticket gives you the full amount before you confirm. The promoted Grand Canal experience also offers reserve now and pay later, and the mobile ticket is available immediately after booking.
This is the easiest route when you prefer a clear digital payment trail, a confirmed cancellation policy and no payment discussion at the water's edge.
03
Paying at a gondola station
Walk-up gondolas use the municipal tariff, but payment facilities are not identical at every station. Ask one direct question before boarding: Can I pay by card?
Then confirm three more details:
- the total fare for the gondola;
- how long the ride will last;
- whether any requested extra time, music or special route changes the price.
Do not board until the total and payment method are clear.
04
Cash, card and receipts
Cash is useful as a backup, but you do not need to carry more than the agreed amount. If you pay at a station, ask for a receipt.
If you book online, the booking confirmation and payment record stay in your account or email. Keep the mobile ticket accessible even when your signal is weak.

What about vaporetti?
The payment rules for ACTV waterbuses are different from gondola payments. ACTV accepts contactless payment on its transport network and sells tickets through official channels. See the official ACTV ticket information for public transport rather than assuming the same system applies to a gondola.
